Easiest Cafe Style Matcha Latte- A Tasty Afternoon Pick Me Up!

If you’re looking for a tasty alternative to your afternoon coffee, then give this simple matcha recipe a try.

I have found that Matcha is commonly rooted in ritual. The bamboo whisk, ceremonial grade matcha, the sifting. It is a calming routine, one might even call it a practice, that allows you to focus on something simple for 5-10 minutes and then enjoy a tasty treat provided through the rhythm of Matcha!

As a busy mother of two, I have not made the time, other than ordering a true matcha latte at an upscale coffee shop, to dive into the real culture and process behind authentic matcha. So, I cheat sometimes and buy premixed matcha. Sometimes I’ll buy just plain matcha and then add my own sweetener like honey or maple syrup. But I have recently been purchasing this cafe style mix from Azure Standard and I am really happy with it! It does contain cane sugar but compared to some pre-made mixes I have found, it has half the amount of sugar in it than the others.

Making a matcha latte doesn’t require any special tools. But I have to tell you, I absolutely love my Breville Frother. Let me be clear that it is definitely NOT a necessity in the kitchen. Its not a “can’t live without” gadget and I am not trying to sell you on the idea that you need one for your home. I’ve made matcha plenty of times in a sauce pan over the stove with a whisk. It gets the job done and makes me a hot cup of matcha! If you whisk hard enough you can even achieve a good froth! But I purchased this Breville a while ago and I LOVE it. Its so handy. Its also really simple to clean and that makes using and caring for this gadget even better.

I’m sharing this recipe using this mix simply to pass along something I enjoy—it’s an easy, approachable way to make a great matcha without overcomplicating things. If you’re looking for a tasty afternoon pick me up, alternative to coffee, then give this matcha latte mix a try and let me know how you liked it!

  1. Prepare your 1 Tbsp of Matcha Powder and approximately 2 oz of boiling water. You want enough water so that the matcha powder is completely covered.

2. Combine boiling water with matcha powder.

A hand

3. After you have added the water, use a hand-held frother, fork or whisk to combine the two. (The handheld frother makes for a lot less arm power.)

4. Once the mixture is well combined, pour it into your stand frother.

5. Add about 1 cup of your milk of choice.

* You can also heat and froth your milk separately if you do not have a stand frother!

6. Set the frother to the desired temperature and press the middle button to start. ( I like mine REALLY hot, somewhere around 160 degrees F).

7. The Breville Frother is self regulated, so once the mixture is up to temperature and frothed it will stop on its own.

*If frothing your own milk, heat it on the stove top and vigorously whisk or use a handheld frother.

FAQs

What is the difference between ceremonial grade, latte mix, and culinary matcha?

Latte Mix: Pre-mixed matcha powder with sweetener, can be enjoyed hot or iced. Similar to what you would receive at a cafe.

Ceremonial Grade: Only the ground matcha powder which is made up of green tea leaves, this is typically enjoyed as a traditional tea.

Culinary: Mostly used in cooking and baking due to its bold matcha flavor.

Is it really necessary to froth twice?

You can forego frothing the milk if that is not as important to you. However, once you combine the boiling water with the matcha powder it is ESSENTIAL to completely combine the two. Either using a fork, whisk, or hand frother to combine the mixture will help you to reduce the amount of clumping that can occur. Of course, a hand frother is the most fool proof way to achieve this. This is the one that I currently use.

How do I add even more flavor to my matcha?

There are a few options to add a little bit more flavor to a matcha latte because it is a rather earthy tea. Adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder and frothing that in as well can add some flavor, and the extra protein will help keep you more full. You can also always buy your favorite flavored syrup to add to your latte. Lastly, the type of milk that you choose will affect the flavor as well. Some dairy-free options tend to be a little bit sweeter than cow’s milk. Coconut milk can add a sweeter, more coconut flavor to your latte. My absolute favorite way to enjoy matcha is in an iced blended matcha latte with a scoop of vanilla protein powder. I will be posting my exact measurements & recipe to that very soon!

What is different if I am using ceremonial matcha powder and my own sweetener?

If you are using your own sweetener like honey or maple syrup, I recommend adding it after you’ve made your latte. Combining the matcha powder, honey/maple syrup, and the hot water at the same time may be too much for the handheld frother to mix together, or might be more difficult for you to whisk by hand. Once you’ve added your hot milk to the water and matcha mixture, your sweetener of choice will have an easier time incorporating. I just add it and then give it a mix with a spoon.
