Tired of spending lots of money on tiny little yogurt pouches that your kids just then throw away once they are done? Trying to learn how to reduce your impact of plastic waste while still feeding your little ones tasty snacks? Or are you just looking for a fun way to get your kids involved in the kitchen with something that excites them and they get to eat? Then join me as I make yummy homemade strawberry banana yogurt pouches for my children. Not only do they love them but I can control the ingredients going in them too! It’s a win win situation.
My daughter loves pouches. Especially pink colored yogurt ones. I will still buy the pre-made yogurt pouches from the store if we are traveling, but for at home, I decided it was just as easy, and less expensive, to make my own. Plus it’s summer time and a fun activity for her and I to be experimenting in the kitchen with fresh fruit from the orchard and farmers markets, and make what we pick from our own yard, into yogurt based drinks like smoothies, pouches, and popsicles.
I wanted to start simple with flavors and we almost always have all of these ingredients on hand. If it’s not summertime, then we always have frozen fruit in the freezer. It can be tricky sometimes to get the right consistency for the yogurt mixture. I’ve found that starting with less liquid is best, and I only add enough to get it to fully blend together. It’s really easy to make the mixture too thin, and the goal is to keep it as thick as possible without adding thickening agents. If it doesn’t pour out of the blender with ease, I scoop it out with a spoon into the pouches just as easily.
My inspiration to make our own yogurt pouches comes purely from two things: to be in charge of the ingredients going into them, and to reduce my plastic footprint. I try to be as conscientious as possible when buying plastic, and the less I can the better. Especially with items that are intended for single use only, and if all it takes is a little more work in the kitchen for me to help minimize my footprint, then I’m game! I bought these reusable pouches and so far I love them. I’ve found that I can’t actually fill them all the way to the fill line, I have to fill a little bit less and then I’m able to close them without pouring some out. I can make about 8-10 at a time which gets me through about a week. If you have multiple bigger kids in your household, you may need to have two sets of the pouches. I don’t mind making them once a week and it’s especially fun to alternate the flavors during this summer season.
To make: add the yogurt, banana, strawberries, and coconut water to blender. Blend until just combined. Then fill each pouch, zip, and store in the fridge for up to one week (if they last that long). I keep them low in a spot so my daughter can access them by herself without asking for help. She likes to get one first thing in the morning before breakfast, or for a snack during the day. I recommend testing the yogurt mix before you pouch it. If it’s not sweet enough for you naturally, then I suggest adding some sweetener like maple syrup or honey. It probably won’t take much, so use a cautious hand.
I hope you and your kiddos enjoy these pouches as much as we do. If you tried this recipe and loved it, please rate it 5 stars and leave a comment below. I would love to hear from you! Best, Ana.
